![]() ![]() The current knowledge on pathobiomechanics and modified therapeutic decisions implicate the need to devise an updated classification and treatment regimen of Galeazzi fractures. Thus it is recommended that if a Galeazzi Fracture is diagnosed then to proceed with surgery to have the best chance of regaining the lost function of the hand due to this severe injury. DOI: 10.1055/s-0034-1367035 Abstract While diaphyseal fractures of the forearm are a common orthopedic injury, Galeazzi fractures are difficult to treat. Treatment is generally closed reduction and casting for the majority of fractures. Diagnosis is made with plain radiographs. ![]() Nonoperative treatments also resulted in the arm being weak with poor grip strength and lifting abilities with the affected hand which is not the case of the Galeazzi Fracture is treated surgically. Galeazzi Fractures are rare injuries in the pediatric population and consist of distal radius fractures at the distal metaphyseal-diaphyseal junction with concomitant disruption of the distal radioulnar joint. In fact a study suggests that of all cases of Galeazzi Fracture that were treated non-operatively 92% ended up with not so good results with incomplete restoration of arm function and other functional abnormalities. However, if the patient is treated conservatively then the prognosis is more guarded with the chances of a nonunion of the fracture being reported to be more. Patients who had proximal or distal radius and ulna dislocations were excluded from the study (Monteggia or Galeazzi), as were those with intrajoint fractures. The worst results were obtained in type-I lesions. It is extremely rare for a Galeazzi Fracture to end up with a nonunion after surgical fixation. PMID: 8145315 DOI: 10.1097/00005373-199403000-00012 Among 33 patients with a Galeazzi-type fracture-dislocation of the forearm, there were two children and 26 adults with a classic Galeazzi injury, and five patients with a Galeazzi-equivalent lesion. The overall prognosis for a Galeazzi Fracture after surgical treatment is quite good. What is the Overall Prognosis of a Galeazzi Fracture? ![]()
